چکیده

Protected areas play a crucial role in the conservation and management of wildlife, but land use cover change (LULCC) threatens status protected areas. Sri Lanka has history severe human–elephant conflict (HEC). In last 15 years, recorded highest mortality elephants second-highest human casualties among countries where Asian elephant is native. this study, we conducted whole country analysis effect LULCC on using map (1993–2018) recently developed by authors Landsat satellite data. area performances were measured five criteria including LULCC, areas, categorised into three performance levels. The then compared with number HEC incidents. We found that 12% Lanka's was affected events, every individual experienced LULCC. also 86% death incidents occurred within 5 km radius strong negative correlation distance from (r = –0.94, p < 0.05). Some 43% 23% deaths inside while 40% two years These to fragment over time increased, showed positive correlation, fragmentation 0.88, Wildlife regions higher greater deaths, moderately 0.54, Irrespective level performance, all reported as well incidents, indicating are failing protect endangered Elephas maximus population Lanka. country-wide insights can be used re-evaluate function effectiveness managing mitigating providing protection

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in captive elephants (Elephaus maximus maximus) in Sri Lanka.

Serum samples collected during August 2003-June 2004 from 45 privately owned captive and 8 elephants from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage were tested for the presence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii using the direct modified agglutination test (MAT). Antibodies were found in sera of 14 of 45 (32%) privately owned elephants with titers of 1:25 in three, 1:50 in three, 1:100 in three, 1:...

Summation by Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus)

Recent empirical evidence for complex cognition in elephants suggests that greater attention to comparative studies between non-human primates and other animals is warranted. We have previously shown that elephants possess the ability to judge the difference between two discrete quantities, and unlike other animals, their choice does not appear to be affected by distance or overall quantity. In...

Luteogenesis during the estrous cycle in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

The occurrence of multiple corpora lutea (CLs) in the ovaries of the cycling and pregnant elephant, a monovulatory mammal, has driven scientific discussions during the past five decades. However, fundamental knowledge on luteogenesis is lacking. In this long-term study, CL formation and regression throughout the estrous cycle were monitored using transrectal 2D- and 3D ultrasonography in 33 cap...

Tuberculosis in captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Peninsular Malaysia.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from 10 January to 9 April 2012, to determine the seroprevalence of tuberculosis (TB) of all captive Asian elephants and their handlers in six locations in Peninsular Malaysia. In addition, trunk-wash samples were examined for tubercle bacillus by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). For 63 elephants and 149 elephant handlers, TB seroprevalence was ...

Studies on feed digestibilities in captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

In order to test the suitability of the horse as a nutritional model for elephants, digestibility studies were performed with six captive Asian elephants on six different dietary regimes, using the double marker method with acid detergent lignin as an internal and chromium oxide as an external digestibility marker. Elephants resembled horses in the way dietary supplements and dietary crude fibr...
